NEW LAWS FOR MOBILITY SCOOTERS?

An incident, a couple of weeks ago, has seen experts urge Ministers to change the law with regard to mobility scooters. A young lad, Finley Kemp, aged six, was left with cuts and bruises after being run over by a woman in her 70s. She was driving her mobility scooter and dragged the young lad along a pavement. in Gosport, Hampshire.

And figures from the Department for Transport show that in 2015 mobility scooters were involved in 222 accidents, eight of which were fatal. It was up from 209 a year earlier, 156 in 2013 and 84 in 2012.

The call is for the highway code to be updated to take into account the sheer number of scooters, e-bikes and ‘non-conventional’ vehicles using Britain’s roads.

A suggestion made last year by the Conservative MP, Kevin Foster, that mobility scooters should carry number plates was rejected by the government. David Davies, the executive director of the parliamentary advisory council said that Britain would see an increase in unconventional road casualties as more people used the scooters and e-bikes.
